The family
that made me.
Construction workers build Nairobi, and Maxwell says many go home without fair pay, safety equipment or any protection.

Maxwell did not just observe mjengo workers. He lived among them.
He knows the pain of an unpaid wage, an unsafe scaffold, and a family left stranded after a worksite injury. That lived experience, he says, is his mandate.
He has pledged to advocate for workers in the county assembly.
What workers face
- Pay that is withheld or cut
- No safety equipment such as helmets, harnesses and first aid kits
- No NHIF or NSSF registration
- Verbal hiring with no written contract
- Long shifts without overtime pay
- No one speaking for them in the county assembly
The mjengo community is, in Maxwell’s words, the family that made him.
What he will push for
Fair wages
County-level minimum wage enforcement for construction workers.
Written contracts
Mandatory contracts for casual and permanent site workers.
Site safety
Building inspections that make worker safety a condition of site approval.
NHIF and NSSF
Registration drives for every Kabiro mjengo worker.
A workers’ SACCO
A Kabiro Mjengo SACCO for savings, emergency loans and collective bargaining.
Legal clinics
Free legal aid sessions so workers can assert their rights.
